How Negative Feelings Can Help Us

Believers are in a spiritual battle and will face trials and tribulations in this world. The war is in our thoughts and minds. It is a battle for the faith, and the enemy never gives up roaming around seeking to devour the truth of God’s many promises, with doubt and unbelief.

For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, 2 Cor 10:4-5 NAS

It took me a long time to understand the unbreakable connection between my feelings and thoughts. Today, however, whenever I feel unsettled, depressed, troubled, fearful, worried, or any other negative emotion, I know I have been thinking wrong. It could be worries and fears about one obvious major issue or a series of many small negative thoughts throughout the day that gradually increase the burden I am carrying. I may not even be able to put my finger on the issue precisely, but negative feelings and emotions always come from wrong thinking.

Wrong thinking leads to defeat in the days battle and depression and disease in the long run. But God gives us red flag warnings to help us overcome the enemy. We just need to change how we look at our feelings. Feelings and emotions are God’s warning system to alert us to wrong thinking that will lead us to a heavy disabling burden only the enemy wants us to carry. 

The question is, are you heeding God’s warning?

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me, put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Phil 4:8-9 BSB
