Title of the Book: The Fall of Ninevah

The book of Nahum is a sad commentary on the nation who once experienced the great compassion of God under the preaching of Jonah. But 100 years have passed and two generations later, it is not surprising that Nineveh's rebellion reappeared. We cannot always be assured how those who follow after us will respond to the preaching of God's word. And so it is in the case of Nineveh. Her sin was very great and so was her destruction. There was no opportunity for her to repent like there was at the time of Jonah. When men fail to respond to the love of God there are consequences for this and experienced "The Wages of Sin" (Romans 6;23)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. To begin, compare the book of Jonah with the book of Nahum. What are the similarities and what are the differences.? (Just a few statements, not a detailed analysis)

2. In chapter 1:1-5, the power of God is described. What comfort does this give to the faithful and what warning is there for those who are not?

3. In 1:7, discuss the consolation that these words give to those who are facing great difficulty?

4. In chapter 2:1-5, who is this army described in these verses and who are they preparing to war against?

5. In chapter 2:7-13, with who is this battle raged, and what will be the outcome?

6. In chapter 3:1-3, describe the intensity of destruction as performed by these invading armies.

7. In chapter 3:4, discuss the reasons for this battle against Nineveh. How serious are these particular sins?

8. In 3:5-7, describe the extent of her judgment as found in these verses.

9. In chapter 3:8-10 describe her failure. What important role does history play in the progress of a nation?

10. In the remaining part of chapter 3, try to analyze how heartbreaking a matter Nineveh's judgment should instill in our hearts. Consider the condition of man today who must face similar sorrows without the help of God.
