Independence Day....

4th of July....

July 4th....

Is it a red-letter day on your calendar?

I’m in the autumn of my life; it has perks. Reminiscing is one advantage. I look back to happy times of days gone by. Join me in looking forward to this year’s Independence Day celebration. I remember Dad; I dedicate this patriotic piece to him, Franklin F. Ford.

Dad loved our nation.

He celebrated Independence Day with unabashed patriotism.

July 4^th was important to Dad.

He worked 2 jobs to support our family and had no money in savings. Yet, he sensed the importance of giving his children colorful sparklers. Every summer, Dad drove us to Uncle Alex’s neighborhood grocery store to buy our fireworks.

Each long white box held a handful of sparklers. Reaching inside, we pulled out the first sparklers of the night. I learned patience as I waited for Dad or Mom to light my sparklers.

Quickly, I twirled the sparklers at arm’s length.

Occasionally, Dad took us to see 4th of July fireworks on a larger scale at ‘Suburban Park;’ an amusement park in Manlius, New York. Looking up at the sky, we saw the fireworks and celebrated our freedom.

King David looked up and worshiped the Creator God.

“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him (Psalms 8:3-4a NKJV)?”

I worship the Creator. I celebrate my freedom in Christ.

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed (John 8:36 NKJV).”
