Divine Appointment

“Oh you speak English?  I am an English student.  May I ask you a few questions in English?”

I was doing a prayer walk on a University campus in a restricted country.  I had just said “Hello” to a girl approaching me when she asked me those questions.

“Yes”, I replied. “I would like that.”

“We have many holidays here.  Can you tell me about American holidays?” she inquired.  I told her that we have Memorial Day, and Labor Day, which is comparable to her Workers Day, plus two religious holidays, Christmas and Easter.  Then I paused on purpose, waiting for her response.  “I have heard of Christmas,” she said.  “Can you tell me about Easter?”

You can not proselytize in that country, but you can answer their questions. The goal should be to get them to ask good questions, which she did.  That was the question I wanted.  

I suggested that we proceed  to the other end of the campus, distancing ourself from a guard shack.  As we walked I told her about Jesus’ love, quoting John 3:16 and how he came to take the penalty of our sins.  She referred to that as an interesting superstition.  “Oh, No!”, I stated.  “That is not a superstition.  That really happened.  It is true!”  It was shocking to me that she perceived my deeply held beliefs as superstitions.

Soon we reached the other end of the campus where I introduced her to a Christian faculty member who could help her with her English and tell her more about Jesus.

This is an example of planting a seed that someone else will water and harvest.  I do a lot more planting and watering than harvesting, but they are just as necessary.

Sharing Christ is my purpose and passion.
