Prayer. Who Cares?

“Aajan John, (or teacher John), do you see that temple over there?  That is where I went yesterday to pray for my mother,” Kruo pointed out excitedly.

Kruo, a Buddhist teacher in Thailand, understood English well.  I was taking her to the Board of Education for my wife’s work permit.  I said, “Yes. I see it.  That was nice.  So tell me, Kruo, to whom did you pray?”  

She thought briefly then replied, “I prayed to the monk.”  

“That was nice, Kruo.  Is the monk in a position to do anything about your mother’s condition?” I asked.  

After silence she answered,  “I want to change my answer.  I prayed to Buddha.”

“Now tell me, Kruo,” I proceeded, “I understand that Buddha lived a series of good lives until he reached a state of perfect peace and tranquility, called Nirvana.  Correct?”  

“Yes.  That is correct.”  

“If that is true,” I went on, “do you think he will come out of that state of peace and tranquility to do anything about your mother’s situation? I serve a living God who hears every prayer and is all-powerful.”

“Stop. Turn here.  We’ll continue this later.” she said.

Several weeks later, Kruo said, “The teachers want you to come back next year.” 

“Kruo, we’ve already accepted assignments in Manilla next year.”

“I prayed to your God.”

She did understand.  Then I reminded her that God answers my prayers according to his will.

Prior to going to Thailand, we wondered how God could use us when we knew so little Thai.  God, however, arranged many Divine appointments for us. 

It is so comforting to know that in our turbulent world God hears our prayer and has the power to respond.
