The Surface Understanding of Christianity

So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine (John 8:31).

According to Pew Research Center 2020, the number 1 religion in the world is Christianity; the adherents are 2.3 billion or 29%. The rise of Christianity is unstoppable despite the severe persecutions in the past. However, looking back at the ministry of Jesus, we fully understood the word Christian and Disciple is synonymous. Luke said the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch (Acts 11:26).

We knew from the gospels that there are three types of people Jesus mentioned following His ministry. First, those who are not His disciples, second the fake disciples and the third His true disciples. The 2.3 billion Christians in the world are not precise margin if we follow the principle of true discipleship which was Jesus taught in the gospels. Look, the statement of Jesus in John 8:31, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine”. What does it mean? The word “continue” in Greek is “menó” which means, to stay, abide, or remain. This is an indicative mood, meaning it describes something as really happening or in reality.

The problem today is the infiltration of the surface understanding of Christianity. There are some Christians who are not serious about their faith. They don’t read, study, and apply the Word of God, but they professed as Christians. On the other hand, all Christian religions claimed as worshippers of Jesus in general (Matt. 7:21). But, the bottom line here, the genuine follower of Jesus is redeemed, saved, and abiding (Rom. 3:24; Jn. 1:29; 3:36; 8:31). This is true Christianity, not sporadic but consistent!

Therefore, as a true disciple of Jesus, you must continue in the things you have learned (2 Tim. 3:14; Acts 2:42). Be diligent to present yourself approved to God (2 Tim. 2:15). Go and bear much fruit for His honor and glory (Jn. 15:8, 16).
