IT'S HOW I SEE IT, THE EMOTIONS

“This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Look! Disaster is spreading from nation to nation; a mighty storm is rising from the ends of the earth.” At that time those slain by the Lord will be everywhere—from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned or gathered up or buried, but will be like dung lying on the ground.” (Jeremiah 25:32-33)

When I woke up this morning, it was as if my thoughts had already run amok before my feet ever hit the floor. Emotions such as fear, anxiety, distress, fright, alarm, and on and on, appeared to bounce out of my head and onto my surroundings at will.

“What day is this, what time is this?” I asked to myself rather softly, as I made my daily preparations to start this day off right. Hopefully it will not be like my days in the past. But it was.

Quickly I disrobed from my PJ’s into my street clothing. Other than that, nothing new with me because I was still under house arrest, as I was in the days before and probably the days ahead. “I might as well settle down and take life in stride,” I thought with resignation. Maybe I need to get in touch with some of my friends, at least to just reminisce a bit. Perhaps it will pull me out of this cellar of everlasting despair.

I called a church friend to ask how he was faring, how he was making it these days. His reaction was, “By the gallon and half gallon.” Now, I know this fine spiritual gentleman is no bootlegger. Nonetheless, like me, he has just about had it with this involuntary house arrest. A little light-hearted levity was his escape.

Much like my loyal church friend, my days have settled into somewhat of a monotonous routine. After the initial feeling of cabin fever when I first awoke, my day began the same as yesterday and the day before that.

I begin with the customary washing down my many lifesaving pills, with the help of a big glass of chocolate milk, coupled with a side order of powered donuts. I have totally abandoned my bathroom scales in light of this on-going crisis. You see, I have enough on-going developments to worry about, and starvation is not in the mix. Afterwards I made my daily trip down to my man cave, where my life would continue.

The music starts with my instructive command to my trusted friend Alexa for my daily dosage of Praise and Worship devotional music, followed by my usual pick-me-up trip back in time, with the Fifties radio channel.

“Dear, is it time for my morning snack?” I would then call up the stairs ever so softly, so as not to disturb the wife. That is, if I’m lucky enough to have wakened from my mid-morning snooze.

One never-ending project I now delight in doing, during this forced house arrest, is catching up on my retirement hobby of freelance writing. I am most fortunate to have the sympathetic understanding of my proof reader. This continuing venture is made to order, for it surely takes my mind off all the doom and gloom being spread around the world these days.

Along with my hobby, we now have the various high-tech devices to keep us happy, during this world wide crisis. That is, when the onslaught of bad weather doesn’t shut off our power and we can’t charge up the batteries. Oh well, you can’t have everything, I guess.

It’s kind of like that legendary rock and roll singer of the Fifties would sing, You Send Me. Well those iPads, iPhones, wireless computers, bluetooth speakers, and the likes are doing just that, sending me out of my would-be depression into a life of high-tech ecstasy. I understand I can now even ask Alexa to brighten someone’s day by sending my other Alexa contacts a big hug.

Again, I’m so grateful to my aforementioned church friend. We constantly keep the phone lines open by taking advantage of our time honored First Amendment right of free speech, through our hotly buzzing phone lines from house to house. You see, he fits the biblical example of having faith as a grain of mustard seed, a spiritual philosophy which I so badly need during this particular time. Not only that, we are about the same age, and can rightly talk for hours, looking back to the good old days of the Fifties.

Speaking of spirituality, we are so blessed. We have not missed a Sunday service during this on-going crisis, as our church services are being broadcast online, the singing, preaching and all the spiritual trimmings. In a recent service, we all took part in Holy Communion, by way of the internet.

I can’t help but curiously wonder what will come next by benefit of the social media after this current virus crisis is put to rest, possibly a follow-up events of national weather calamities. We sure seemed to have had our share of weather calamities here lately. Or maybe it will be a well- organized demonstration.

Regarding the spreading of societally generated news, just think back if you will. How did we ever make it, when the television weather person would draw the weather patterns on the big chalk boards?

The nightly news only had one broadcaster, who had to complete each sentence alone by himself.  The three television channels closed up shop at midnight with the national anthem sign-off, and reopen in the morning after showing the test pattern all night.

And I can hardly wait till I can again jump into my old straight shift Chevrolet, roll down the windows, drive downtown and get some of that 25 cent a gallon gasoline, under the watchful eyes of the four uniformed attendants who check the water, the oil and wash the windshield. I’m dreaming of course.

Guess I need to halt my reminiscent gabbling for now, as it's almost time for the nightly television press briefing with respect to this ongoing crisis.  I surely don’t want to miss it. If I did happen to miss it, what would I have to talk about?

You see, we all are going through the same storm, but we all are not in the same boat. Just don't let fear sink your boat.  “This too shall pass.” Amen!

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (II Timothy 1:7)

Yes, that’s about it with me for the time being, holed up in this comfortable foxhole I call home sweet home. It’s simply how I see it.
