GIVE ME THIS MOUNTAIN!

(But for now, I will be satisfied with a small mound of dirt.)

By Henry Jaegers

And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old  And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children’s forever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God. And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so, is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in. Now, therefore, give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said. And Joshua blessed him and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance. (Joshua 14:8-13)

Over the years, I have been fascinated with these words by Caleb. After I retired, when I reached age 79, I recalled these words and prayed that somehow God would help me to be like Caleb and have the faith and the strength to do such as he has done.

I expected that the Lord might answer that prayer when I turned 80, but after careful reflection, I realized that Caleb was not 80 when he spoke these words, he was 85. I just discovered this recently.

I am now 82 years old and have not reached the mountain as of yet. Then I realized, that I have three more years until I reach 85 years old. So, maybe I am asking prematurely for this request. Perhaps, I am not ready for God to answer that. That is certainly something to think about.

I am in good health, I work out on the treadmill for over an hour each evening, I try to give God a healthy body, so why can't he give me this mountain? As I have stated at the topic of this message, maybe I am not ready for the mountain yet. Perhaps, I must be satisfied with the hill or even a small mound of dirt in which to be faithful. It will be interesting to see how God answers this prayer for me. In the meantime, while I am waiting, I will try to be faithful with whatever God has entrusted to me.

Now that is something to anticipate. Maybe the Lord will call me home before I reach 85, or maybe, just maybe he will give me at least a small mountain to conquer.
