"Let thy garments be always white,..." Ecclesiastes 9:8a.New King James Version (NKJV).

The above quote is the Preacher's counsel that holds each day. Since I have been growing up, most especially in my youth days, I have a strong love for white garments. Later in my adulthood, the Lord impressed it on my heart to make use of them more than multi-coloured attires. Not only this, people of God were also sent to me to deliver the same message, of wearing white garments.


For the purpose of this piece, these words will be employed synonymously and interchangeably garment, apparel, clothes and attires.


Certain things (you can call them facts) about white apparel will be examined before delving into its spiritual relevance.


Prominence. Among people who put on multi-colored clothes, someone who wears a white garment takes a prominent position. What do I mean by this? White attires attracts attention that is special. They who put them on are easily recognised. They look or seem different.
White clothes draw people's attention to the wearers!


Maintenence. Another truth about wearing white apparel is that it is some how expensive to maintain. What does this mean? Most of the time, essentially in the tropical region of the world where the intensity of burning sun is unpredictably high, a pair or complete set of attire can only be worn once. After this, it weeps for washing. Failure to eliminate the stains, sweat and dust will proclaim wearer as a "dirty fellow", whether they say it or not - that will be people's impression.


Not only this, many times, washing white apparel calls for applying special stain removers, which may not be needful with mult-colored clothes. Do not forget the wise counsel of the Preacher in 9:8 of the Holy Scriptures
"Let thy garments be always white."


Sitting. Every wearer of white clothes are always very careful of every seat on which they will sit. He can not sit down on just any seat made available to him. Before sitting, he will ensure that the provided seat is neat and clean-he will ensure that nothing on the seat can cause a stain on the white clothes on him.


If the seat has been cleaned, he will do the cleaning again to avert denting lasting decency that white apparel portrays.


Standing. Anyone who wears white clothes is always watchful of where he will stand. As much as possible, he will avoid standing on a place where, dust, mud or anything can put dirty mark on him. He is always careful not to stand with people that can put a dent on him and his apparel. Many times, he will avoid them. When it is impossible to avoid them, he will do all within his power to maintain a safe distance so that they will not soil his white attires. He is aware of the fact that if he allows people to put a stain on his attires, he will bear the guilt and the shame.


Walking. Wearer of white garments are always watchful of where he will walk. He is aware that he could not afford the cost of walking in a murky water or on a polluted land. Not only this, he cares about people to walk with. He stays far away from careless people who will not hesitate to put a dent on his white apparel.


SPIRITUAL RELEVANCE : Do you know that every righteous person who has confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour has a white garment on him. You can call it a garment of holiness or uprightness. This must be kept without any blemish starting from the day of birth in Christ until the end of his Christian race on earth that is a reason Christ's followers were first called "Christians" in Antioch Acts 11:26.


Note the words of the Psalmist in Psalm 1:1 and the discussion in this write-up. You will appreciate the importance of white garment and its spiritual relevance. The verse reads :
"Blessed is the man that walketh not in counsel of the ungodly nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor in the seat of the scornful."
Blessed are those who keep garments pure and white.
