In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. John 2:14 NIV

The temple courts were meant to be an area for worshipers to fellowship and converse over temple readings. This was meant to be an extension of the place of worship to God, yet man had different plans for its use. As sacrifice was to be made by each family during Passover, this was a prime area in which animals used for sacrifices could be sold. This would require the exchange of money for goods and foreign currency brought into the area would need to be exchanged for currency suitable to the area. The fact the temple court was not being used for a Godly purpose angered our Lord, and He thus took action.

Today, what is the area surrounding a church have as its purpose? Is it to gather and share God’s word and fellowship, or is it used for business purposes? The carrying on of business has its proper place.
