All I wanted was a Christmas tree

Momma had declared, “We cannot afford tree this year.” As my brothers and sisters looked on we could all see in each other’s eyes the disappointment, but momma made the announcement quickly and hurried from the room she did not want us to see the water that filled her eyes from having to had made such an announcement. It was not to much later that daddy came in and he announced there would be no gifts. Like momma he too hurried quickly out, his eyes was not filled with water but his head was hung low from the feeling of letting his six children down. We are slowly sat upon our beds and looked at each other speaking only with the sadness upon our faces. My oldest brother leaped from his bunk bed and said, “Hey Christmas is a week away and we can make money to get a tree and gifts.” He came up with the idea of us going to the local grocery store and helping customers with their bags, and then he said we could shovel snow from neighbor’s walkways, and driveways. We all scurried off to meet our many task and when the week was over we had $85.00 amongst us all. The plan was that we would all purchase our own small gift and get a tree, but God had other plans. We purchased our parents gifts, and we, we were happy with the tree the smiles the blessing and the lesson of what Christmas is really about “giving.”
