John did not know Jesus, even though they were cousins? I believe the statement of the Baptist here to mean that he did not recognize the Messiah by sight. He knew of His forthcoming, as he was the Lord’s herald. John spent his time in the desert, while Jesus had been in Nazareth with Mary and Joseph. Remember that 2000 years ago that distance was an obstacle to encounters, particularly for those who did not have a financial abundance.
Here John elaborates on the voice in the wilderness, spelling out that he was the one who was to proclaim the coming of the Messiah to Israel.
Today, we go out and proclaim the Messiah, who came to earth for the salvation of all mankind. Many souls are searching, knowing that there is something they are missing. That something is someone. It is Jesus Christ! Share the Good News!
