“He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” John 1:27 NIV

First, we realize that John, as the forerunner of the Messiah baptized with water, an outward act of the desire to change. The change required on the inside of the individual would come only through the indwelling of the Holy Spirt, the baptism provided by Christ Himself. Today we still have baptisms in water as an outward sign of changing. Yet unless the heart and soul are given to Christ, then the Holy Spirit will not indwell the individual and the baptism of water does not lead to that which is needed.

Second, the loosening of sandal straps would have been the task of a slave. Yet, John said he was not even worthy to do this for Christ. We truly do not deserve that with which we are blessed with through our Lord. Yet, he lovingly showers His grace upon us. We who know and love the Lord praise and thank Him for His abundant giving to us. Always be mindful of your unworthiness and the Lord’s graciousness to you!
