He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. John 1:8 NIV

The writer of the gospel wanted to make it quite clear that John the Baptist was not the Messiah, but a witness to Him.

Have you noticed how many people speak on behalf of themselves? They seek recognition for that which they have accomplished. Even those who have someone introduce them with accolades, the main speaker then goes on with further accomplishments, etc.

John was so different in that he did not seek for himself. He wanted to make people aware of the forthcoming Messiah that all would believe in Him (the Messiah). When asked by the leaders as to who he was, he replied with him being a voice crying out to make a straight path for the Lord. The Baptist sought glory and honor for the Messiah, the one for whom He bore witness. Let us do the same as we preach the Good News to a world in need!
