In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 NIV
The initial verse of John’s gospel is quite possibly the most profound verse of the New Testament. We begin here with the preexistence of time and creature. God was not created. He existed already in the beginning. Everything that is created must have a creator. Nothing can be created from the lack of anything. Therefor some being existed in the beginning. And that being is God.
The middle statement brings to light the coexistence of something with God. God the Father was not alone prior to the creation of time and creature. The Father was not alone in the void.
The final statement brings to light two more thoughts. First, it speaks to the oneness of the Word and the Father. Jesus tells us later in John “The Father and I are one.” This oneness far exceeds any earthly oneness. The Father and the Word are one in essence. Secondly, the statement speaks of the distinction of person. How can God be more than one being? This is far beyond our full comprehension. This fact causes many to not believe. Why can we not accept something which we cannot fully understand?
Yes, this verse might truly be the most profound statement within the New Testament. If one cannot accept it, one cannot accept the existence of God.
