Where Did Everyone Go?

“Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” Then everyone deserted him and fled. Mark 14:48-50 NIV

Jesus knows the thoughts of all people, but He asked the question here to have the people realize the absurdity of that which they did. They could have arrested Him when He was in the temple, but they had no instructions then from the higher authorities.

And Jesus mentioned that the scriptures must be fulfilled. Jesus in His action made sure that He fulfilled all that was written in scripture about Him. Scripture is the sacred word of God.

And finally, after all that Christ had said, all of His followers fled. Since Christ was not fighting against His arrest, the others feared that they might also be arrested. Fear crept into the hearts of those who followed Him. It was just as the scriptures had foretold and that which Christ had told them.

We also at times flee from Christ for various reasons. The important thing is that we realize our foolishness in doing so and return to Him. Christ does not keep a scorecard of the number of times we flee from Him. If we repent and return to Him with a humble heart, there He is lovingly waiting for us, ready to forgive and restore us unto Him.
