Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over. Mark 14:10-11 NIV

Betrayal almost always carries a motive on the part of the betrayer. Here, Judas was seeking money, which the authorities agreed to pay Him upon the delivery of Jesus to them.

Have you ever been betrayed? One definition of this word is deserting, especially in a time of need. Most of us feel as if at some time we have been betrayed. It can especially hurt when it is someone to whom we are close. What thoughts came to your mind in your hour of betrayal? Thoughts of anger, hurt, worthlessness, and others quite possibly filled you.

Betray can also mean to lead astray, especially to seduce. Here again, many have been betrayed. We may have fallen victim to someone we know, maybe even trust, or it might be someone we do not know well. The betrayal can embed within us feelings which are not good. For some, overcoming such an event takes long periods of time.

A third meaning of betrayal entails delivery to an enemy by treacherous acts. This is the form of betrayal our Master endured. What made it worse is that it was by one of His own. He knew this was forthcoming, yet He accepted it as it was part of the plan of the Father, prophesied many centuries before His birth. He accepted it that we might be saved through the shedding of innocent blood. His betrayal led to our salvation.
