I live in the Deep South, so all I can do is dream of a White Christmas as the song goes. That is until Christmas 2002 when the best gift I’ve ever received was faith. My six-year-old son started around the first of December praying for snow. I told him that although God hears our prayers, we do not always receive a “yes” for an answer. Jordan could not be dissuaded, he would have snow for Christmas and he would not accept “no” for an answer.

Jordan had come to me at the age of four, crying hysterically in the middle of the night. “Mama, I want to ask Jesus into my heart, but I don’t know how,” he said with his speech impediment. I ran back to my bed to ask my husband what to do. He was so young. “You get back in there and kneel down with that boy,” Step-Dad said. That night Jordan accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. His teacher told me the following year that I should begin saving money for seminary. Jordan was testifying to his classmates and holding prayer meetings before school as a first grader. With fire and persuasion he would tell his peers, “You’ve just got to ask Jesus into your heart.”

That December was not one that I will soon forget. As Christmas approached, Jordan prayed the same prayer every night. “Dear Lord, please let it snow for Christmas. That is all that I want.” I did not want his faith to be hurt. I could not bear to see him discouraged or disappointed, but he believed that he would have his request granted when he prayed. “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer (Matt 21:22).

School dismisses for winter break about a week before Christmas each year. It is at this time that my oldest two children go visit their daddy for two weeks. He lives about four hours away, so that did not increase Jordan’s chances for snow. I did not share the prayer with his Daddy, knowing that it was impossibility to natural eyes.

I received a telephone call on Christmas morning. “Mama,” an excited voice on the other end of the line squealed. “What, Baby,” I responded, thinking he would tell me about what Santa Claus brought him. “We took a trip to Branson, Missouri for our Christmas gift from Daddy. We woke up this morning to six inches of snow,” he said. Jordan had believed the whole time. It was at this time that I had to tell his Daddy what his request had been for Christmas. God had orchestrated the entire thing. It was a highly unlikely for us to have snow for Christmas, so having heard my sons’ prayer; God took Jordan to the snow.

God’s ways are so far above our ways. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declared the Lord (Isaiah 55:8). He was teaching Jordan how to pray believing. That is the Christmas that my faith was increased even more as a result of watching my son grow in his walk with the Lord.
