“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.” Mark 14:6-8 NIV

I don’t believe that Mary knew the significance of what she was doing when she anointed the Lord with the expensive perfume. She did it out of love for her Master. She had no ulterior motive. What lies behind the acts which we do for the Lord? Do we do them solely out of love for our Savior, or do we at times have ulterior motives? Where does our heart lie? If we truly love God with all our heart, mind and soul, then what we do will be a reflection of that. If anything beneficial from it comes to us, let it be the Lord’s doing, and not our intention. We must trust that the Lord will provide for all our needs. We are not to use serving the Lord to be for our benefit. Those who serve the Lord will justly be rewarded by Him.
