One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:28-31 NIV

How is it that Christ picks certain commandments as the most important? Are not all of them very important? Of course, they are all important. What Christ implies here is so very true. All of the ten commandments are encompassed within the following of that which Christ shares here. In following these one does not break any of the commandments. It is when we choose to dishonor God or our neighbor that we then break the commandments. So, the two commandments are the most important that within them all the commandments are encompassed. How can Christ make it any clearer to us that which is required of us? Focus on loving God with all your heart, soul and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. This is what God truly wants of us.
