The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it. Mark 11:12-14 NIV
One must understand first that fig trees bear their fruit before leaves. So the fact that Christ saw that the tree had leaves and yet it was not the harvest time for figs was reasonable in thinking the tree would have fruit. Finding no fruit though, He cursed the tree. This tree is like the unbelievers of Christ’s day, bearing no good fruit for God. Those who do not come to Christ and do not bear fruit for the kingdom shall in no way inherit the kingdom but shall spend eternity banned from God’s presence. Do not be like the cursed fig tree. Bear much fruit for the Lord that you may be rewarded for doing His work after you come to Him. Keep in mind that salvation is not through the works which you do, but, as a follower of Christ, you should be pleased to serve Him.
