Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:42-45 NIV
Get ahead in life. Put yourself first. Work at being in authority. We are taught this from an early stage in life. This is how the world tells one to find meaning in life. But Jesus has a different answer. To be first in God’s kingdom one must be last, the servant of all. Jesus Christ, the only Son of God did not come down from heaven to be served, but to serve others, and to sacrifice His life as a ransom for the sin of mankind. Most certainly Christ could have asked to be served by those surrounding Him, being who He is. Yet that was not the plan of the Father or the Son. Christ set an example as to how we must live our lives if we wish to be great in God’s kingdom. Don’t think that you are being asked to do that which Christ did not do Himself. Living a Christian life is in direct contrast to living a life as one of this world. Choose to belong to Christ.
