“Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” “We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. What does it mean to be baptized into Jesus’ baptism? We must be dead to the desires of this world in order to be baptized into Christ. Jesus, the Son of God, did not grasp at His divinity, but instead emptied himself of self that He might live His life solely for the accomplishment of the Heavenly Father’s will. He did not think of Himself and His needs. He focused on helping others and obeying the Father’s will. It is not easy at all to rid oneself of desire for the self, but it must be done in order to follow Christ. How can one truly focus on the betterment of others and be focused on oneself at the same time? Our earthly needs are met by God. We must focus on eternal treasures and not those of this world. Be pleasing to the Father and to the Son. Forgo your wants for the needs of others.
