Salt And Fire

Everyone will be salted with fire. Mark 9:49 NIV

This passage might seem disturbing. If we take the word everyone to be inclusive of all mankind, then what do we make of the words salt and fire?

Salt can be a substance used in purification. Christ tells us that we are salt of the earth. But salt can also be stinging. But what about fire? It can definitely be destructive, but it also can be used in purification. John the Baptist told those who came to be baptized that One would come after Him who would baptize in the Holy Spirit and fire. Fire can purify by burning up that which keeps one from purification. The Holy Spirit works within the believer, busy in the purification process. We must relinquish our will to be replaced by the will of God through the indwelling Spirit working within us. Those who are not believers shall face the eternal fire of hell. Through salt and fire allow the Holy Spirit to work within you that you be purified.
