DEVESTIGE: Air Brush

A lone yellow leaf
Remains poised
On the maple tree
Flag high, hugging near as it can
To the blackened limb.
The tree airplanes
In the low pressure
As the might of cold air
Passes in heaving consternation.
The leaf pushes up,
Sustains the invisible blows;
Momentarily hanging to its birthright,
Inhaling the clear fall leavings
Of an earth wind that wished to extinct its fire;
The stem where it kisses the moss moist wood
Liplocks its vernal bud, but cannot hold--
The last of its kin
To watch the sterling lights of Perseid
Between the hallowed harvest moons;
The last to feel a thousand woooz of coming ice:
Lone gives way to sail float;
In soft sun-slant scene
The bough dries its last wet wound
And stutters in a terminal briefing of sunlight,
Far after to breathe no more the fertile Moles
That rived in 'the summer wind.'
