     One of the more interesting facets of history is not finding enough quality books which deal with the faith lives of some of the more well known Black men and women of years past.  Thus, when a solid written work surfaces, it is worth its weight in gold; not only for those of us who happen to have a little gray around our temples, but for young people of the next generation who have a true hunger for reading.

    William J. Federer, host of the “Faith In History” television series is the author of “George Washington Carver: His Life & Faith in His Own Words” (2008, 111 Pages, Amerisearch, Inc.).  Federer, who received a book on Dr. Carver in his own youth, poured over a lot of Carver’s written letters, papers, and other communications and set them upon the written page in dynamic fashion.

    Seldom do we get the opportunity to have a ‘behind the scenes’ look at how a Christian man or woman ‘wrestles’ with their faith in order to follow and do the will of God.  In a day when we are swimming in information, it is even more crucial--especially to young Christians--to see that there are people who accepted Christ, allowed God to chart their lives, and grow up humble in the light of their great participation in history.  

    It is even MORE crucial that young men and women of color understand that there is more to Black history than a ‘once a month’ salute.  There are REAL heroes out there that, because of their faith in God, they are often marginalized by some of our OWN race.

    While this volume is small, it is power packed.  Among the 12 chapters that compose this powerful work, the reader will be taken on a journey through Carver’s life.  The correspondence between Carver and a variety of people, plus the opportunity for him to share his faith and upbringing are a solid portion of this work.  Also, Federer includes a variety of items on some of the honors won by Carver, and his interaction with other notable inventors, statesmen, and famous people of his era.
