TOPIC: The body consists of about 37 to 40 trillion cells. How do we know? See discussion.

BIOLOGY tells us that: Life come in two forms based upon the number cells required for them to exist. The name is not important. There are entitles which are self contained units which contain all the components needed function to live in one cell. An example of this is bacteria and viruses. Then there are entities that are called multicellular organisms, that contain thousands, millions and trillions of cells that function collectively to exist.. One of these entities is Homo sapiens. There are multicellular entities in and on land and in the ocean.
We are told that human body comprises of cells, tissues, organs and organ systems. They say that a human body has about ten to eleven organ systems depending on how you label and categorize.
How many cells are in a human body? Cells come in different sizes (volumes) and different densities (weights or masses). In addition cells are packed differently. The exact number of cells must be estimated. Using weight a 154 pound man would have 70 trillion cells. Using average volume to calculate the number we would calculate to be 15 trillion cells.
So what is the answer? How Many Cells Are In Your Body?
One author set about searching the scientific literature for the volume and density of human cells of the different organs and tissues of the body. After the research they did some calculations and came up numbers for each organ and tissue. For instance they found that we have 50 billion fat cells and 2 billion heart muscle cells.
SIDE NOTE: Now the question is asked if we all have the same number of fat cells, how come I am fat and Susan is skinny? This is because 50 billion is the number of fat cells. This number does not tell us what is contained in this fat cell. It is like a three bedroom house. You can have a empty three bedroom house or a cluttered three bedroom house.
BACK TO THE DISCUSSION: I guess they then added all the parts and came with a total figure. They came up with a whopping 37.2 trillion cells.
One graduate student used to quote this “I refuse to make a judgment before all the facts are in.” The facts about this universe will never be in. these facts will always change. This 37.2 trillion cells is the current estimation. So let us go with this figure. We can be corrected later.
