Abiding In The Spirit That Brought The Jericho Conquest

After the Lord had strengthened Joshua (as is mentioned in Joshua Chapter 1), the first task was actually the toughest-the conquest of Jericho. The Lord is always much desirous to work wonders for His own, yet will be able only to fulfill His perfect and good will in the atmosphere of ‘faith and sanctification’, and thus ‘lack of faith and a sinful life’ are perfect grounds of hindrance for the Lord to bless us.

Joshua chapter 2-4 worked on the faith boost up for God’s people and chapter 5 on purification and sanctification, and thus in this perfect scenario which pleases the Lord God always, He brought about the victory in Chapter 6. They were supposed to go on in this same Spirit for all their future conquests, yet as the sin of greed crept in through Achan, the people of God experienced defeat at the hands of the small nation of Ai (Joshua Chapter 7) where thirty six precious souls were killed.   

Joshua was totally surprised as to how this blessed trail of victory was disrupted, it did not make any sense to him, until it was revealed to him by the Lord that the perfect atmosphere of ‘faith and sanctification’ has been marred by sin.

In our life too, we will surely experience the goodness of the Lord and witness His mighty wonders, yet only in the atmosphere and Spirit of perfect ‘faith and sanctification’, and the greatest hindrance in our life will always be disbelief and sin.

King David who was a prayer warrior himself discloses this blessed truth about prayer..

“If I regard iniquity in my heart,
The Lord will not hear.”

Psalm 66:18 NKJV

Even though we may spend many hours and days in prayer, yet if there be any unconfessed sin which we have not forsaken, we should not expect any response from the Lord God.

The Lord desires not only our confession, but also that we forsake our sinful habits…

‘He who covers his sins will not prosper,
But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.”

Proverbs 28:13 NKJV

The big ‘Jericho’ or the small ‘Ai’ needs the same conditions to be conquered, “The perfect atmosphere of ‘faith and sanctification’”

God desires our success, let’s not annul this by our ‘disbelief and sin’, let’s abide always in the Spirit that brought the Jericho conquest, let’s be faithful and true to the Lord always, trust in Him and lead a holy life, then shall we surely witness His awesome providence and goodness.

Ai was captured and the people of God experienced awesome victories when their hearts were inclined to please the Lord God in all they did and lead a faithful and holy life.
