AND JAMES CAME A LONG
Standing a great way a way from the place of the crucifixion, James looked on with anger. His brothers paced around the area an hour arguing amongst them selves. Being far away from the crowd, their debate went on
without any interruption from outsiders. They were arguing about Jesus hang on the cross and the type of life he had led. After a fruitless debate each one of them bade James fare well and went home. James however, drew closer to the crowd now that the others had gone. He had not wanted to look concerned about Jesus.
Finding his way into the crowd, he beheld clearly the body of Jesus as he hang there. Jesus body looked like a mass of torn flesh with so much blood oozing out. How could Jesus have ended up dying like this, he thought. Someone patted his shoulder and he quickly turned to see his neighbor Shimei.
"Were you scared?" Shimei asked.
"Of course not." James replied checking his anger. Then feeling that Shimei would do no harm he added. "Any way, it really isn't easy watching your own brother die like that".
"I know." Shimei replied. Then looking at James and seeing that his eyes were focused on Jesus, he said "You know if your brother had not been such a radical we would be preparing for the Passover. He was always way out of line. Never once did he agree with the Pharisees."
"You are right there." James replied. "Just look where it has got him."
"Mum is surely heart broken. Having a son who seemed so perfect dying like a criminal! You know Jesus just had to over do it didnt he. Funny enough, although, I never could agree with him I always admired his goodness. He never did do anything wrong except talk too much about the kingdom of God and such things."
"Where are Joses, Simon and Judas?" asked Shimei.
"They have gone home. Theyd been discussing the burial. But it is something we will not do as a family. Let his friends do it. We have been disgraced enough."
There was a lot of jostling amongst the crowd as a soldier placed an inscription on Jesus Cross. The mocking grew louder as the people called on Jesus to save himself. James looked on quietly wondering what to expect. Perhaps the disgrace could turn to honor if Jesus would just show the crowd that he could still do wonders and get off that cross. It was a long wait and then giving up he turned to Shimei and said, "I remember once telling Jesus to go to Judea so that his disciples could see his works. Joses, Simon and Judas also joined in and told Jesus not to be secretive. Do you know what Jesus told us? He gave us some funny answer about time. He said my time has not yet come. Now look at him."
"Everyone is shouting to him to save himself, may be if you go nearer and call him, he will listen."
Fiercely, James grabbed the neck of Shimeis robe and shook him. " Care full Shimei, that is my brother that we are talking about."
Then pushing him aside roughly he walked away through the crowd. As he did he noticed his mother standing with John, one of Jesus disciples. They were probably discussing the burial. Not wanting to disturb their discussion he went home.
The following morning, James woke up with a headache. Joses entered his room and told him that he had heard that a certain man from Arimathea by the name of Joseph had buried Jesus. Soon after that Simon and Joses both entered the room and asked about Mary their mother.
"My mind is a bit hazy now, James answered But I do remember, John one of Jesus friends coming home last night and saying that he would look after her. Jesus told him to do it."
"What you mean from the cross, he could still do things like that?" Simon asked.
"Hey, James, why did you let John take her?" Joses asked angrily.
"Yeah, shes our mother!" Judas added.
"I figured that she needed some peace and quiet," James replied tiredly.
"So now even you agree with Jesus, after all the disgrace he has brought upon us?" Joses asked looking at James angrily.
"Oh, leave me alone, I am confused." James muttered frustrated.
After his brothers left the room, James did nothing but think. He pondered over his life and the things he had said about Jesus. He wouldnt eat or drink but questioned and questioned. Unfortunately, there were no answers. The following day was Sunday. By afternoon, James was in tears just thinking about Jesus. He remembered the time when the family had gone to see Jesus and instead of coming to meet them soon after he was informed of their arrival Jesus said of his disciples whosoever did the will of his father God the same was his mother, his brother and his sister. Then quietly as if talking to Jesus James said I wish you were not dead because then I could have followed you. At that moment Jesus stood before him causing him to fall to his feet. He looked different. Bright as if light illuminated from him. What was more he was smiling.
"It is really you. I believe in you. I really do. I know you not just my brother you really are Lord."
