THE SIN THAT BESETS US
THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run the race that is set before us. Hebrews 12:1 (KJV)
During a period of prayer and fasting at the beginning of the year, part of my focus was sin that I struggled with. I wondered why I always ended up confessing the same thing to God repeatedly.
Leviticus 16:17-22 tells of how the high priest would transfer all the sins of the people on a goat by laying hands on it and confessing all the sin before God. He would then let the goat go into the wilderness. This was a sign that all the evil that was on the people was carried away.
Thinking of the sin laden goat strutting off into the wilderness, I wondered what would have happened if the goat had returned to the camp. What a horror! No doubt it would have been killed and most probably speared. No one would want to touch it and be defiled by sin.
How do we treat the sin that so easily besets us? Do we reluctantly accept it and choose to wallow in it or do we acknowledge that it is not welcome anymore. In order to run our race with endurance we should see sin just as God sees it, as something horrid.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to see sin the way that you see it, that I may not be comfortable to return to it. Help me to live for you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
