John Parker was a tall, lean, athletic machine. He was a good-looking man. His chiseled face and wavy black hair reflected his German and Italian heritage. As a tennis player, his height and excellent stamina gave him a decided advantage over most middle-aged players.
After an efficient workout with the ball machine, John was relaxing upstairs at the Midtown Racquet Club. He thought he was alone in the locker room when he heard a voice that seemed to come from behind him.
“Take off your shoes and smelly socks. For you’re on holy ground.”
Startled, he looked around to see who was joking with him. He said out loud with a smirk, “Yeah, right. Who’s hiding behind the locker?”
“John, I prefer not to tell you twice.”
This time the voice was louder and more resolute. John flashed back to the memory of his father talking to him. He respected his dad and knew what that tone of voice meant. John started to take this seriously.
Feeling goosebumps on his arm, he inquired, “Who is this?”
“This is your Heavenly Father. It’s the perfect time for you to get to know Me.”
“I didn’t believe I had a real Heavenly Father.”
“John, I choose you as My son. I want to live in you for the rest of your life and for eternity.”
“I have an issue with long-term commitments. My marriage didn’t turn out too well, as I’m sure you’re aware.”
An evil voice hissed in his ear, “You’re not good enough to be one of his. You weren’t even adequate as a husband.”
This accusation hit him like a punch in the gut. His mind began to replay the worst memories of his marriage.
“John, I have made you in My image, and I choose to make my home in you. The ball is in your court.”
“How in the world can I live a Christian life? After all my failures, you want me on your team?”
“Trust me. You may not be an all-star, but you’re not the worst person I’ve dealt with.”
The evil genius said with a venomous tone, “Remember what you said to your ex-wife. What kind of man would say that?”
“You’re just a man in need of my grace like everyone else. What do you say to my offer?”
Feeling the warmth of God‘s loving presence, John’s heart softened. He removed his footwear and asked, “What exactly do I have to do?”
“Accept the sacrifice that Jesus paid for you. Repent of your sins and ask Him to forgive you and take residence in your heart. Turn from your old way of life and follow Me. Read the first three chapters of the book of John a few times, and we’ll talk again. This is the start of a good long-term relationship.”
Scripture: John 14:20
“And that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.”

I enjoyed this story. It's a true illustration of how the enemy aims to use our past to keep from living the purposeful life God designed for us. But when we learn to accept the voice of God over any reminders of our past by the devil we will be set free and live out an amazing life with Christ. I look forward to reading more from you.
