Those ditches we’ve heard about along the path of life. One kind we slide into over the slippery grease of super-grace. The other kind we are dragged into after being lassoed by the letter of the law.
Praise and criticism can also land us in ditches. Praise if it swells our heads with pride, criticism if taken too seriously or not seriously enough. Both praise and criticism should be lifted to the Father in private, one like a sweet box of chocolates giving glory where it belongs, the other to be sifted in His light for any truth it contains. Criticism shouldn’t be blown off or dismissed too lightly, but neither should it be allowed to get under so thin a skin that it causes us to loath ourselves or the one who offered it. The balance and proper response are found in what the Proverbs call the fear of the LORD. This allows us to learn and grow from the criticism, even to thrive from it. (See Proverbs 15 v.31-33)
