Hundreds of thousands died in gruesome battles in both world wars to gain a few yards of scorched ground and occupy a different trench filled knee deep with mud and blood.
In one case it was a mere ten yards they gained after many days of fighting, and all for what?
At least in football they get a first down for all their pain and trouble.
Could that be part of the reason why today so many retreat into sports and entertainment, fleeing the mounting reality of genocidal atrocities closer and closer to home? Too close in fact for comfort. Too painful or too frightening to contemplate.
