“But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, ‘Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?’" (Exodus 17:3 / NIV)
Why me? Why this? Why now? Why here? The Israelites were not alone in their grumbling. We’ve all asked the “why” questions. Circumstances can leave us wondering why we’re suffering, especially if we’ve tried to make Godly decisions. The pain often outweighs the desire to even know why.
Instead of “why me,” a better question may be “why not?” God the Father suffered greatly when He allowed His Son to die on the cross as payment for our sin debt. Jesus suffered greatly in carrying out that payment. Since They suffered for me, should I expect to always escape it? I’ve never met anyone who enjoys suffering, and I look forward to the day when pain will be no more. But as trials come – and they will come – we can search God’s heart for what He is trying to teach us.
We can always trust the “Who” when we can’t make sense of the “whys”. With God, there are no coincidences. Knowing there is purpose in everything takes some of the wind from the sails of our “why” questions. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5 / KJV)
Lord, let us always focus on You and feel Your presence, particularly when we can’t make sense of our suffering. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
