When the two disciples of John the Baptist asked Jesus "Rabbi, where do you stay?" (John 1 v38-39) they were also asking where he lived in the sense of, how do you see things, how do you view the world, how do you respond to things, what's it like to be you and be conscious in the way you are conscious, and be conscious of the things or people of which you are conscious? All that and more was involved and implied in their asking where he stayed. Obviously they had to spend time with Jesus to begin to answer the depth of all those kinds of questions, they had to see him in his own environment and habitat, so to speak, which was why Jesus answered, "Come and see." He is still saying that to us today when we long to get inside his mind and heart and live our lives through him moment to moment, when we yearn for him to live his life through us in the here and now of our own world.
After all, the two disciples of John the Baptist had just been told by their Rabbi that this was the Lamb of God, this was their new Rabbi, the one for whom they had been prepared. They were being handed over to the Rabbi of all Rabbis, the most gentle Lamb who was to take away the sins of the world! (Sins past, sins present, and sins future) This may not have been as easy to do for John as we sometimes. But, remember, he was the one who said, "He must increase, but I must decease." (John 3, v.30) Accepting a decreasing role is made easier if we know it's truly Jesus Christ who is filling the vacated space the way He wants it to be filled, and if we know that we have successfully played our part to the best of our ability for that season that it was needed.
