Sex…
Some people talk about it. Some don’t. But nearly everyone ponders it at some point or another. Yes, lust is a biggie, and it’s a lot of baggage for this bad boy to bustle through life with. I mean, seems no matter how long I have been walking in the Spirit (25 years), lust seems like it’s the last to go.
And no wonder, for the Bible warns us about the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eye (1 John 2:16). So, I know we all wrestle with it in one way or another. And nope—There’s no way around it till the Day of the LORD when He finally finishes fixing us (Philippians 1:6). True, many believers have beaten sexual lust, but they still have their own crosses to carry, too, don’t kid yourself. But speaking for guys like me—a former male prostitute whose whole life was just sex, Sex, SEX—it can be a gut-wrenching and chilling challenge for sure. So, here are a few tips the LORD has taught me to overcome such surges when the old man in me (Colossians 3:9) sees someone sexy.
Remember how the Bible says to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5b)? Well, when I get that urge to take that second smoldering glance at someone sexy, I just say, “LORD, please smash this sinful desire to smithereens?” And ya know what? I’ll tell you what…Our delightful and darling Big brother Jesus delivers me from it—EVERYTIME!!! That is, unless I CHOOSE to linger longingly instead of letting Him help me let such sinful desires die at His demand.
Nope, walking this world with Jesus doesn’t have to be waywardly hard at all. I mean, God is seeking spiritual progress—not perfection, to state a cliche. And no matter how much we may stumble, God knows we are at least trying to obey Him. And He blesses us for that Big Time, for His heart is that huge towards us. So, remember if You are anything like me: No matter how many times we fall short and fail to obey our faithful Father not to lust, some of us sometimes succumb to it, anyway. And it’s okay, kiddo, just keep trying and talking to Him about it, for God seeks honesty in the inward parts (Romans 7:22). Which is to say—He just wants us to be ourselves and to share our surely sorrowful struggles with sin with Him.
I mean, He’s not some big, bad cosmic cop in the clouds waiting to clobber us over the head every time we come up short on righteousness. Nope. He don’t be anyting like dat. He’s a darling, doting, and dear-hearted Deity, who accepts us completely, and who loves us with all His heart—yes, warts and all. Mind you, He doesn’t like any of our tendencies to tread troublesome trails, but He wants to help us trek through time and enter eternity, when our last day comes, when our eyes become empty to this woeful world and then see anew again the actual physical Presence of our soulful Savior standing there, flesh and yet spirit, with opened arms. You know…that dearest of days when we finally get the chance to meet Him face to face, when we’ll finally get to hug Him back the way He has so faithfully hugged our hearts throughout our walking through this wearisome world.
Finally, He’s taught me that when I lay it on the line with the LORD…I mean, really give Him the straight goods on my struggles with sin, He hears me, lovingly, and He longs for me to ask Him to help, if only I will ask Him to help…If only I will let Him do His thing in me to dispel the darkness that lust blankets my being with.
And so, I do ask Him to help when lust rears it’s repugnant head in my heart. Sometimes a zillion times a day, so to speak. And yup, a zillion times a day this sweet, sensitive, and oh so sentimental Person who is our God helps a brother out by distracting me from the objects of my deadly desires (Romans 6:23).
The end. No more preaching to the choir.
