Marriage
I remember back when I lived in Michigan, and the house had a fireplace - and I would try to build a fire in that fireplace...and the memory of doing that reminds me of our love.
I would place the wood oh, so carefully, with the tiny sticks of tinder underneath, and above the larger logs, arranged just so, and then I would take the newspaper, twisting part of a page and laying it under the logs, and in amongst the tinder...I would set a match to it and watch the paper catch fire so quickly, burn brightly, and go out without starting any of the tinder or the logs...so I'd do it again.... twist the paper, put it in place, light it with the match...and again get the same result....on and on I would repeat this, using page after page....and sometimes I'd meet with success....more often I did not.....but always I managed to use up the entire Sunday paper in the effort.
I think back on my life then, before I met you, and it was so very like building that fire.... I had all the right things, I had them all arranged just right, but somehow the fire just didn't catch. I'd try and I'd try, relying only on myself - never thinking that this was my mistake - and my days were used up like those paper twists, catching fire but making no lasting fire.
Until the day came when I turned to the Lord, and asked Him to do what I could not.... finally admitting the problem was me.
Ah, that was all that He needed, He set about the task, and dismantled what I'd put together that didn't work, and as He worked, He gently explained that there'd been too much of me, and not enough of Him. He re-built the fire, my life He set aright, and when the process was complete.... it seemed He turned to me, and asked if I had learned how to make the fire light.
It took twists of trust, of daring and of risk, and holding them up to Him, for He would provide the tinder for the fire, His love providing the spark...and the fire that He lit would never go out...and then came the wonderful thing...for He let me know that such a lovely fire as this was meant to be shared...and I saw in my mind in front of that fire were two chairs drawn up side by side.... and there you were...the desire of my heart, the dream that I'd thought would not come true...you took my hand, never to let go, and we sat down by the fire of His love.....and the picture I have in my mind ever since is we two basking in that light and warmth.....you in your chair, and me in mine, with our hands linked together between the two. And I know that this fire will never go out, for He built it in love to last...and the joy that I feel is incredible to me that I get to share it all with you!
