 GOD HAS SPOKEN

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;(Hebrews 1:1,2)

 One of the interesting things about this book of Hebrews is that the author of this book does not tell us who he is. There are many people who try to guess but since the author does not address himself, it must not be important. But as I think of these very first words in this marvelous book, I noticed, first of all, it is a book written by God. As is always the case, God uses human writers but in the case of this book of Hebrews the first person mentioned is not Paul, or John, or Matthew, or Mark, or Peter, Luke, or Paul the apostle. The first person mentioned in this marvelous verse and in this wonderful book is God himself.

 We do not know if the author had in mind to hide and speak of God first as the primary write: we must admit that it is a good idea. So, the first name we find acquainted with this book is God Himself.

 Is it an amazing thing that God is not some figment of our imagination and if He was, what a confusing God He would be. Pity the atheist who fails to recognize the existence of a real and living God. Although this God is invisible, He is just as real as if we could touch Him and see Him with our very eyes. Just think for a moment if there was no God. If that is so, then it leaves us with the question of who am I? How did I get here? How long did it take for me to become what I am? And now that I am here, for what purpose is there for my existence?

 The atheist has these questions also but because the reality of God escapes his ability to understand, he must try to figure out a way to answer these important questions. The way that he answers them and the conclusions to which he arrives leaves him more confused than ever when he fails to believe that there is a God who is real, who is there, and who is not silent. But the wonderful fact, despite the imaginations and the conclusions of the atheist, is that there is a God and He is the beginning of all things and he has spoken. Do you believe that?

 Consider also that the God who is there is a God who is concerned about those whom He has created. He is a God who is above all, knows all, and is in control of all that happens. The psalmist has clearly stated that it is the fool that says in his heart that there is no God.  (Psalm 14:1) In spite of all the evidence, his unbelief is not based on a fact but upon a choice that he has made. That choice is to ignore the evidence that is clearly displayed through His creation and through the conscience that God has given to men. (Romans 1:18-21)

 And to think we've only considered one word, “God”. Perhaps the reason why the human author is unknown is that he has seen the need to declare the true writer of this book, being God Himself. So, what else does this verse tell us? First, it tells us that God has spoken at many times, in many ways, through different kinds of people and finally most of all, He has spoken to us through his son Jesus Christ. Everything that God has spoken to us in the past He has spoken temporarily, but now that Jesus has come, nothing else needs to be said. The prophets spoke of him prophetically (that means as one who is yet to come) But whatever they had to say they had in mind one who would come and would be God's gift to all of us.

 God has spoken; he has spoken unto us; he has spoken unto us in various ways and at different times and through different men but be assured of this: God has spoken and the most important word He has to say to us is summed up in the person of His son Jesus Christ. He began speaking to us about his creation of man and He describes to us the wrong choices that this man has made which had a corrupting effect upon all who followed after him. The man had fallen but God was there to pick him up and restore him and he did that through the person of his son Jesus Christ. Jesus who became our substitute, became the Lamb of God provided by God to meet the needs of a holy God, was sent by God to make it possible for us to go to heaven. Without Jesus, we would still be in our sin under the judgment of God and our souls would be lost forever. Through our Lord Jesus Christ and through Him alone is salvation possible. He is God's final words to us in answering the question of how can I be saved? He is God's gift to us and if we reject that gift there remains no more opportunity and our only hope is outer darkness and blackness forever.

 God has spoken. Sometimes He spoke directly to our fathers in the past. Sometimes God speaks through dreams or through visions but most of all in our world He speaks to us through the written word of God which he has provided in order for us to clearly understand who He is, why we are here, and what is His purpose for us. Every day I hear a word from God.

 Sometimes I hear it when I'm reading the Scriptures and other times I wake in the morning with a special word from his heart to me which I in turn gladly share with others. Have you heard Him speak to you lately? Have you received eternal life which He provides as a free gift through His son Jesus Christ? That is where it all begins. It starts with God who is there and it comes forth from a God who is not silent and comes to us through his word. Have you heard Him speak to you today? Have you heard him say” come unto me all ye who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest?” Can you hear Him say in those precious words, “Behold I stand at the door and knock and if any man hears my voice and open the door, I will come in to him and sup with him and he with me”. Will you open that door and let him in?
