Let His Blood Be Upon Us

While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.” “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!” “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!” All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!” Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. Matthew 27:19,22-26 NIV

We are not told what occurred in the dream which Pilate’s wife endured. But, we do notice, that in the warning to her husband, she tells him to not have anything to do with the innocent man. She had at least learned that Christ was not a criminal, and that her husband was being manipulated into making a false condemnation.

Pilate did want to release Jesus, but, the crowd would have nothing of it, spurred on by the words to them from the Jewish leaders. Pilate succumbed to the request of the crowd, due in part to the fear of a riot developing, which he believed he would be held accountable for its occurrence.

Pilate ceremoniously washed his hands stating that he was innocent of the blood which would be shed. Jesus told Pilate that the one who had betrayed him was guilty of the greater sin.

The crowd was so stirred up that they told Pilate that the blood of this man should be upon them, and their children. Little did they know that the innocent blood shed was upon all mankind, bringing salvation to those who accept the Lord and the sacrifice which He made at Calvary on behalf of all of mankind. It was the Father’s perfect plan for our salvation and redemption. We do have a way to eternal life. Christ stands at the door waiting. Make sure you have let Him into your heart.
