For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, Rom 5:19b NAS
We were made sinners by Adams disobedience. In other words, we inherited a fallen sin nature from Adam that leans towards unbelief, is destined for death and rebels with acts of sin. Every human born except Adam, Eve and Jesus were born with this fallen nature according to scripture. So, how could Jesus avoid it having a human for a mother?
Some teach an immaculate conception of Mary, that she was born free from a sin nature and was without sin. Thus Jesus, born of God and Mary, could be born without a sin nature. I believe that this was a well-intentioned attempt to support a means by which Jesus could be born free of a sin nature while having Mary as his mother. But with what we know about medical science today, that they did not know then, we learn how Mary did not need to be without sin.
There is no scripture that tells us Mary was born by immaculate conception, free from a sin nature. If she had been, it would mean that her mother had her by divine intervention from God. If that happened, it would be a miracle that would almost certainly be mentioned. The teaching that Mary was born without sin also disagrees with some very clear scriptures in the Bible. Like many people, the Bible never points out any of Mary’s sins, but it does not say that Mary was without sin. It only says that about Jesus – 2 Cor 5:21, Heb 4:15. To come to the conclusion Mary was sinless, you need to jump through some pretty big hoops with unclear verses and deny some obvious and powerful scriptures. What scripture does say is that none are righteous, NOT ONE, and ALL have sinned. Here we look at the book of Romans, written after Mary was already born. If Mary had not sinned, it seems it would not say, not even one is righteous, or that all have sinned, if Mary was without sin.
for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; as it is written, “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; Rom 3:9b-10 NAS
All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
Here John states that anyone who says they have not sinned is a liar.
If any man says he has no sin he is a liar and the truth is not in him. 1 John 1:8
Then, Mary speaking, obviously knew she needed a savior. “My soul rejoices in God my savior.” Luke 1:47
Mary was favored by God. You are too, Christian.
And [the angel Gabriel] came to [Mary] and said, "Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. —Luke 1:28-29
But the Bible says the same thing about us, using the same word for favor as with Mary. As a matter of fact, the only time the word 5487. charitoó, which means favored, is used, is in these two verses.
to the praise of His glorious grace that He favored us with in the Beloved. Eph 1:6 HCSB
There is a simpler explanation of how Jesus could be born by God through a woman with a fallen nature like ours, and still not inherit a sin nature. An explanation that does not ignore the strong verses that tell us ALL were born with a sin nature.
First, the seed of God, not man, was a requirement so that Jesus would not be born of the seed of fallen man, with a fallen nature like the rest of us. The seed is what passes on the fallen nature.
Since every person born except Adam, Eve and Jesus came from the seed of a fallen man, all are fallen. Adam and Eve were not made sinners at birth like the rest of mankind. But they still chose unbelief over belief, in what God said, “if you eat you die.” This unbelief made all mankind in the line of Adam sinners and wrote death in our future from birth. This is what Jesus came to save us from.
For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. Rom 5:19 NAS
The virgin birth was required because of the holiness of God. This is how we know Jesus was born of God’s seed and not man’s.
But, Mary did bear him. So, How could Jesus be born in the womb of a woman with an inherited sin nature, and not have a sin nature?
- The inherited fallen sin nature is in our blood and is passed on by the seed of man, in the line of Adam.
- Jesus was not born of the seed of Adam. He was born of the seed of God.
- When a fetus is in the womb, the blood of the baby and the mother do not mix. The baby is protected by the placenta. Jesus blood never mixed with Mary’s blood that housed the same sin nature as ours. a) https://www.quora.com/Do-mother-and-child-share-the-same-blood-while-in-the-womb-If-so-how, b) https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placenta
- Therefore, Jesus was born without an inherited sin nature. Jesus is also called the 2nd Adam. He was all about believing God the Father and doing only what the Father would do. He did not make the error that the first Adam did.
Our inherited sin nature is why we must be born-again in the Spirit.
"Do not be amazed that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' John 3:7 NAS
When we are, we are no longer under Adam, inheriting death. We are under Jesus and inherit eternal life and much, much more.
If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Gal 3:29 NIV
to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.' Acts 26:18 NAS
giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light. Col 1:12 NAS
