“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started!” Matthew 23:27-32 NIV

The Lord does not hold back in letting the Jewish leaders know about their hypocrisy. These leaders were concerned only in looking righteous to other humans. They must have thought God could not see all the filth that filled their hearts, minds, and souls. Did they actually believe that they would have an eternal reward for outward appearance? God cares about what a person is like on the inside. He sees the heart and soul. Humans can only see the body. Yes, they can see the actions of an individual. However, true intent can be masked within actions taken.

If your effort is spent on cleaning the outside of your cup, while ignoring the inside, you shall be in for a very rude awakening when you stand before the Lord. We must surrender ourselves to Him, allowing Him to cleanse the inside of our cup. We must believe in Him and who He says He is if we wish to be saved. We must recognize our sinfulness, and come to Him seeking redemption and salvation.

Would you wish to be considered a good person in the eyes of man, or one who is saved by the blood of Christ? Cleanse the outside of your cup, if you wish, but, dare not to miss having the Lord cleanse the inside. Submit yourself totally to Him.
