A Title to Serve

“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Matthew 23:8-12 NIV

Titles are given to doctors, nurses, lawyers, business executives. Do we seek titles for ourselves? When we have been given a title, do we, accordingly expect to be treated with respect since we now have that title?

Respect for one with a title does not come because of possession of that title, but, because of the service provided by the one possessing the title. What makes a doctor, nurse, or other with a title, distinguished? In my mind, it is not the title, it is dedication to the service which they perform, providing the best quality of service associated with their work.

One whose mind is focused on their title, and the respect, and other benefits which come with it, is hindered from doing that which makes them who they are meant to be, the provider of service to others.

This goes hand in hand with what our Lord says. Those who exalt themselves shall be humbled, while those who humble themselves shall be exalted. Be a servant to others, and let the Lord provide that which you need. Being a dignitary, with a title, has no eternal value.
