Blessed to be a blessing

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all you need, you will abound in every good work.  2 Corinthians 9:8

Some people dream of becoming wealthy, to live comfortably and have nothing to worry about. There are even those who are in a hurry to get rich, and using the fastest route, making shortcuts that usually end in disaster, and there are those who use other people just to attain their goals of becoming rich and powerful. Their perspective is, hoarding a pile of cash, properties and other representation of wealth is the end in itself and the main indicator of a man’s success.

Most of the time, envy pushes people to want more than what they can manage. Looking at others, they see themselves as wretched, and so they strive to get ahead of others even if it means selling their souls in the process.

The good news is that for Christians, we have the comfort that God will provide our needs. We read in Psalms 23:1, The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. We have a God who provided our needs in the past; who provides today; and who will continue to provide in the future. Appreciation of what God has given us is the key to a joyful living.

When God is blessing us more than what we need, it means we are given a special mission. As the text stated, we will ‘abound in every good work.’ We are expected not only to share but will involve ourselves in making every good work possible.  We become channels of blessings. Other people are blessed through us, even those who are not believers. In Genesis 39:5, the Lord blessed the household of Potiphar the Egyptian because of Joseph.

As we do good works, more people are brought into the loving presence of the God. We do good works not for show and as a ticket to heavenly rewards, but it comes naturally as a result of our being saved and being blessed abundantly.  The formula is simple: the input is God’s blessings, the output is our good works, which also lead to people knowing God through our works.

As we do more work, more blessings are added to us. The amount of blessings poured on us is based on the capacity of our hearts to share and become a blessing to other people. The blessings are channeled to us and the moment we hold on to these blessings, it will become a trap that will hinder the flow. As we hold on and hoard, it will become a heavy burden that will weigh us down. This is the temptation facing people who are being blessed.

If you want to be blessed, be sure your heart is ready to accept the overflowing love of God, and be more ready to share it to others. Be blessed and be a blessing.
