Who Is Your Choir Master?
© Susan Storm Smith
Living in Brooklyn, I have the opportunity to hear the world renowned Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir every week. Their choir mistress and songwriter is truly inspired by God, and the voices an angelic sound upon the earth. My thoughts today, however, are going from a formed choir to our language and actions—they too are a choir.
While I admit, I do not listen only to Christian music, it is my main theme. Sometimes, briefly listening to the popular music and rap of today’s generation helps me relate to what they are “in tune” with, and that helps me speak about the Lord in terms they understand. As a baby-boomer, I also admit it often is like learning a foreign language!
The new rap, talking about killing, raping, mugging, taking or stealing—as Christians we know it is straight from the pit of hell--an offense to any law-abiding and people loving person.
In my neighborhood, I found that the gangster rappers and the wanna-be’s don’t like gospel music. This summer whenever they turned up their tunes and it was offensive to my ears, I put on gospel praise and worship CD’s. After a while they turned down their music, and I turned down mine. However, not all of them got the message.
One night, during the midnight hour, the most ungodly music vibrated my windows. I put a speaker in the windowsill and turned on my stereo. After a few minutes it still didn’t get turned down and I called to the young man below asking him to please turn down his player. He retorted with “I can’t stand your gospel music.” “Then turn down the rap and I will turn it down,” was my reply. He started cursing and swearing and I put on a Jimmy Swaggart CD of old gospel music. “At the cross … the blood of Jesus …” it was more than the young man could handle. “Stop, stop, stop! Truce—no more!”
The rest of the summer we had no evil on our street. Everyone has commented how quiet it has been, no loud talking and music blaring. “What happened?” they ask.
The young people have become respectful, playing their tunes so low all you hear is a little bass. The cars aren’t double parked adding to the confusion. Why? God set us free in that night hour with a choir of His power. Not Jimmy Swaggart but the message of the music—the Power of Jesus Christ!
I posted the article below on www.blogit.com because we are united in a voice when we come into agreement on anything. My soul was grieved hearing the rap about killing, raping, taking young girls and doing whatever to them and the young men and women laughing, singing, and dancing to the jams. But as adults, are we so much different?
When we know the atrocities of evil against defenseless humankind, and we do nothing—we are saying, “I hear your tune, but I will just close my window.” You, my friend, have power to use or lose.
Your voice in the voting box, in the public square, in emails and letters to your Congressman and Senator, to the president of your country, to the lawmakers around the world, to the United Nations—make your voice heard among the choir of humanity that says—enough is enough!
The Lord said we will have the poor with us always—but if you feed them, clothe them, shelter them—you have done it as unto the Lord. Can you, today, turn your back on the people of the Sudan and other African countries, the Haitians, the people of the Caribbean who are trying to recover from natural disasters?
Become a choir of humanitarians! Through your prayers, donations, volunteerism—make a change—make something happen because you took your God-given voice to do something for somebody else.

We the people--but where is the power?
Great day in heaven--or should I say the voting booths--the great day of decision is about to be completed for another four-years. Hallelujah!! We have argued, contributed, passed out fliers, watched commercials that want our attention, stopped speaking to those who are really opposed to our way of thinking and its ... oh my gosh ... its almost over!
What will we do with all the time we have spent writing, reading and persuading others? How about we spend the next three-years helping to change the voting in the US. Let's work to get rid of the Electoral College so that the power really is in the people and not the rich and opinionated, and the good old boys club!
Perhaps then we could actually have a minority in the White House--African-American, Hispanic, woman, people born in foreign countries that have lived in the US for decades and shown themselves to be an American. What an interesting day that could be! When we the people, for the people and about the people actually become the people.... [more later]

We the people of the world, the humanity of souls can make a difference when we stand in one accord for the good of all people. It may not bring peace, but it can help relieve suffering—and that’s a very good place to start. Its not all about the election of a president—God is really telling us—it is about yours and my election to use the power He gives to every believer.
“Behold, I [Jesus Christ] give unto you POWER to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.” [Luke 10:19-20 KJV]
