Behold the Man!

It seemed to be a one-sided proceeding when Jesus was being judged by Pilate. Jesus seemed to have no say, yet in actuality nothing is out of God’s control.

After the mob had pressurized Pilate and Pilate had done enough harm to Jesus in an attempt to pacify the outrage, he presents Jesus in a pitiful state, neither a King, nor a prophet for him, but someone no less than a clown, a self-professed King being presented now with a crown of thorns and a purple robe..

“Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”” John 19:5 NKJV

If He is God, why did He allow this to happen to Himself? Why did He not stand up like a hero and smashed everyone who fought against Him?

Had He replied to them who persecuted Him in their own way, He would have probably gained the applause of all who saw Him being judged and nothing more, however choosing not to do so, He became the real Hero and thus is loved, worshiped and adored by the so many who acknowledge Him as their Lord and Savior even today.

Yet, how did it impact them who believe Him?

The prophet Isaiah had the answer much before this actually happened…

“He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.”

Isaiah 53:3-5 (NKJV)

What actually happened was not that He received death, but rather that we received a new life,

Not that He was rejected, but rather that we were accepted,

Not that He was convicted, rather we were pardoned.

When Pilate said, “Behold the Man!” we could clearly see the ugliness and shame our sins could have brought us, yet our loving Lord bore this all for us.

When Pilate presented Jesus before the world in a pitiful state saying “Behold the Man!”, Jesus presented us before the heavenly Father saying “Behold my Son/Daughter, cleansed and forgiven.”

Do we treasure our calling? Do we value the price that was paid by our Lord for our forgiveness?

Let’s uphold our Lord’s trust which He has put in us and be the person He made us, for He truly has paid with His own life, so we may receive this new life, for we have always been the most precious and loved for Him.
