Being good to them who persecute us.

It is truly a pitiable situation when we know the truth, yet deny it out of fear; yet more pitiable when we take side with that which is untrue. Here Pilate, the Roman governor is handling the case of Jesus. He knows and has confessed that he finds no fault in Jesus, yet under pressure, he scourges Jesus and tries to please Jesus’s accusers..

“So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they struck Him with their hands. Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him.””

John 19:1-4 NKJV

Often we come across such people who are men pleasers and thus at the cost of truth, they side with that which is untrue.

What does the Bible say about this…

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.“Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Matthew 5:10-11 NKJV

The above is not uncommon even today, for when pride and jealously coupled together rest in one’s heart, they do not miss any opportunity to humiliate others and may even go to the extent of torture by words or physical abuse.

Yet in all this the Lord encourages us to rejoice and not a little bit to be discouraged, for heaven makes itself ready to honor them who are humiliated in this world for Christ’s sake.

Do we have the liberty to hate them who persecute us?

Jesus says….

“But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,”

Matthew 5:44 NKJV

Did our Lord not pray this from the cross for them who crucified Him…

Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”…

Luke 23:34 NKJV

We will have those who hate us without a cause, however let them know and see in us those who love even without a cause, for that’s what the Lord has taught us to do and be.
