Faith and Doubt

Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered. When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked. Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” Matthew 21:18-22 NIV

Sometimes we can see the short-sightedness in Jesus’ disciples. After all the miracles they had seen Him do, why were they so amazed that He made the fig tree wither so quickly?

Again, Jesus speaks of faith and doubt. Why do we allow doubt to creep into our minds? Certainly, the evil one can play a big role in our latching on to doubt. Do we pray properly? Jesus told us that we should pray that the Father’s will be done. What is the Father’s will for us? The Holy Spirit can provide insight to us, but, sometimes we may not necessarily know what the Father wants for us. We still need to continue to trust in the Father and the Son. They most assuredly know what is in our best interest. They know us much better than we know ourselves. Faith which is tested matures as long as one does not give up, but, continues to trust.

Trust the Lord always. He certainly will provide for you that which you need. May the Father’s will be done.
