As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’” The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. Matthew 21:1-7 NIV
When one envisions a king coming, they think of the king coming in a grand fashion. The king would come in a chariot during the times of Christ, and would be accompanied by many servants. Unless the king was well liked, there might not be a large throng to great them as they entered the city. The king would come in all their pride and glory. This is how one would expect a king to come to a place within their kingdom. We must remember that God’s thoughts are not man’s thoughts, nor are His ways man’s ways. God, in the form of man, Jesus Christ, made His entrance into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. The entrance into the city by our Lord, the manner chosen, was prophesied many centuries before it occurred. It had already been predetermined how the Son of God would enter Jerusalem for the final week before His death.
When we ask God to provide for us, do we have a preconceived way that we envision this being done? Forget it. Remember, His ways are not our ways. He will provide that which we truly need, but do not get caught up in the “how”. Leave that up to God.
Notice also that our Savior’s final approach to Jerusalem was in a fashion of meekness and humbleness. When we approach God, we need to do so humbly and in meekness. He is our creator, our Lord, our Master. He shall provide, but, we must approach in the proper manner.
