What are the Sheep Doing?

    There is a growing movement to provide breakfasts and lunches for children in low decile school areas. While this is admirable and good, whose responsibility is it primarily to feed the children? Surely it is the parents who are to provide for their children! With the provision of the food, there will also go the basic teachings of good manners and kindness towards others. Often when the food is lacking, these other things are lacking as well.

      While it is true that the Shepherd went out into the dark and wilderness to look for his lost sheep, He well knew that He had a stubborn and disobedient flock left behind. That lost sheep would not have been in that position in the first place if the  flock had cared for it, warmed it and kept it safe. So the children of today will not grow up undisciplined and hungry if they have the care and love of a proper home life in the first place. The problem is not the lambs, the problem is the sheep !   

The lambs went far astray that day,

They wandered off and far away,

The Shepherd's voice they did not hear,

As they wandered far from near,

No-one called them, nor did they care,

They did not see nor did they share,

A single thought  for those who wander,

They did not care nor did they ponder,

On what would happen to them next,

As they left with ne'er a text.

The Shepherd sees them leave and follows,

O'er the hills and through the hollows,

Catching up when they are snared,

He gently called and then them led,

Back to His fold where all is peace,

Safe once more from wand'rings ceased.
