Marrying Again?

“I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.” The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.” Jesus replied, “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. Matthew 19:9-11 NIV

There are many Christians who remarry. So what are we to make of what Christ says here?

We all fall short of the will of God. God gave us the Ten Commandments, yet, at times we choose to disobey, seeking our will, rather than God’s. Does this mean that we are condemned? No! We need and have a Savior. He knows that we fall short in carrying out the will of God. He died for us that we might live.

What we can learn from this passage is that we do continue to at times make decisions that do not align with the will of God. Every single day we need a Savior. On our own, we will never be good enough to stand before God.

Jesus forgave the woman, caught in adultery, who was made to stand before Him, with the Pharisees seeking a sentence upon her. He does the same with us today.

We must never lose sight of our need for Jesus to save us from our shortfalls in carrying out God’s will. We have a Savior because of God’s love for us, not because we deserve one.
